Charlie Robison

July 17, 1999
Originally from Bandera, Charlie Robison has become a major influence on country music from his home base in Austin. His hit, “Barlight”, has done well this year on the Billboard Country music charts as Charlie has broken all barriers of the traditional country music style. This is not your typical country music.

Charlie’s debut CD, Bandera, was released in 1995 and included an assortment of tunes clearly reflecting the soul of his home in the hill country. He began developing an almost cult following that grew with every performance. Charlie’s co-producer, Lloyd Maines, knew he had found something special with a fresh approach to traditional themes. By 1998, Charlie had put together an outstanding band, fine tuning his alternative country sound. With the release of his second CD, Life of the Party, Charlie’s career has been launched from relative obscurity, and is now receiving national attention…Nashville is listening as Charlie Robison shows them how it should be done.

Those familiar with Charlie’s live performances know the bigger than life presence Charlie’s band produces while rockin’ the walls of venues such as Gruene Hall, Satellite Lounge, or the Mucky Duck. However, our first introduction to Charlie was a solo acoustic performance several years ago opening for The Marshall Tucker Band at Rockefellers. His clean, basic, and soulful presentation stole the show and made us seek out who this guy was. Texas Nights House Concerts is very pleased to be able to present Charlie Robison once again in what has become an extremely rare solo appearance. With the recent attention being given to Charlie’s work, this may be our only chance to get him on our stage. Don’t miss what may be your only opportunity to experience the roots of Charlie Robison’s music, solo and acoustic, at the most intimate venue in the Houston area.

Grady Lee Opens
Grady Lee has performed around the Houston area and throughout Texas for the past 30 years. He is recognized as one of the premier singer/songwriters of traditional cowboy music. In keeping with our theme of NOT C&W music, Grady will treat us to his original styling of tunes from the trail.

Concert review

Well folks, one of our original goals for TNC has been accomplished…Charlie Robison on the deck. On a hot and muggy Texas Gulf Coast night the music was all that moved through the heavy air, offering a once in a lifetime experience to be remembered.

Grady Lee got things started with a terrific set right from the trail. The crowd warmed up to Grady quickly as he wove visions of Mama, ropin’ and ridin’, hill country panoramas, and the muddy Rio Grande. It was easy to pick out Grady’s followers in the crowd and even easier to see why he draws such a devoted following. Thanks to the Boykins, Grady was joined on stage by Dale Evans for his last song, a tribute to the Saturday morning persona that every young buckaroo dreamed to have by his side on the trail. We want to thank Grady for sharing his songs with us. We hope you can join us next Saturday at the Old Quarter to hear Grady perform some rather unorthodox bluegrass with the Leeway Band.

Finally, Charlie quietly took a seat with guitar in hand and literally took control of the stage. The solid poetry and artful crafting of his songs was proven as they were brought back to the original version as each had been written. Charlie’s music is solidly grounded with the simplicity that was shared with us on the deck last night. Between songs, Charlie shared some of the personal experiences that have motivated him with his dry baritone delivery that drew the crowd into his life for the moment. The night was Charlie’s, and Charlie was at his best. Our sincere thanks go out to Charlie for sharing the night with us and for a truly phenomenal TNC performance.

We’d like to thank Paul Cesak for providing and running the sound equipment for us last night. “Big Leg” Bob fired up the grill again and treated us to more of the finest drumsticks Texas has to offer. A special thanks also goes out to Jean Campbell for all the help she offered to make the night so much easier for us. TNHC has really been a treat with so many great friends that have jumped in to help make it all happen. We had several new faces in the crowd this time, and we hope to see you back at many shows to come.

Now it’s time to gear up for Tom Faulkner’s return to the TNC stage on August 14th. We are now taking reservations, so grab your spot early. See you on the deck!

For the love of the song,
Barney and Beverly Goodman
