Girls with Guitars

Whether in a crowded club, small coffeehouse, or in your living room, Girls with Guitars always deliver delightful harmonies of love, life, and hope, making sure you remember to laugh a little along the way. Their covers of artists such as Indigo Girls, Cheryl Wheeler, Lucinda Williams, and others challenge the stars, but it’s their original music that really shines. Kelly and Ferryn, GWG, serve up a unique slice of melodic friendship with every performance proving that This Is The Life, to be savored, nurtured, and seized at every moment. Once you’ve heard GWG, you’ll come back again and again just for the joy of it.

Many of you have heard the Girls perform around town and know how special they are, and they just keep getting better. Their opening for Ray Wylie here last November left everyone wanting more…so friends, here they are! Kelly Wallin and Ferryn Martin, GWG, will be performing songs from their debut CD, This is the Life, a must for every CD collection. We’ll also be treated with some new stuff from their current CD project…hear it here first!

Ken Gaines opens
Ken has been a cornerstone of the Texas music scene and the Kerrville Folk Festival for years. He currently organizes and performs at a monthly singer/songwriter night at Anderson Fair. Ken adds a pinch of jazz for flavor to his traditional folk style known for producing uncontrollable toe tapping in all but the most disciplined listeners. We are proud to present one of Houston music’s best kept secrets for openers. Hear Ken here first and you’ll come back when he performs a full show later in 1999!

This is sure to be an intimate evening to remember…come with someone special.

Concert review

We had another fantastic night last Saturday. We still can’t believe we were able to enjoy a night of music on the deck the first weekend of February.

Our sincere thanks to Kelly and Ferryn for another terrific show. Ferryn, your voice definitely stood up to the challenge! We wish you luck as you take to the road the rest of this month. Next Saturday, GWG will be playing White Oak Coffeehouse in Austin & then they’ll be making the trek to Albuquerque to perform at the Folk Alliance later this month…the word is starting to get around, Girls. I don’t know if you noticed, but Rocky REALLY enjoyed Crabhouse Blues. It was the first song we’ve ever heard him try to sing along with. We didn’t realize our dog was a blues fan, but there you go.

We’d also like to thank Ken Gaines and Wayne Wilkerson for gracing our stage for the first of what we hope will be many performances. Ken seems to bring something new to every gig…I’ve had this urge for a hot buttered muffin ever since! And folks, was Wayne GREAT, or what? I might just have to put my guitar away for good…I’m not worthy.

We hope you all will try to make it out to Anderson Fair this Thursday night to catch Ken & Wayne at the songwriters’ night. It’s a really laid back and comfortable listening room with some outstanding music. Ken always draws some special talent to share the stage…usually someone you haven’t heard before, but you’ll wonder why. And Wayne backs the best of ‘em just like they’ve been playing together for years. Hope to see you there! Also, we found out that Wayne plays with a group called The Swing Kings. They’ll be performing next Sunday night at Cosmos on Heights Blvd. (next to Hickory Hollow) and at the Mucky Duck in the near future. If you like Swing, catch Wayne at Cosmos next Sunday…6:00 p.m.

We had a great jam session on the deck Saturday night. For those of you that couldn’t stick around, you missed some fine licks. Thanks to Ken, Wayne, Mike, Paul, and Jeff for sharing your tunes. It was a nice way to unwind after a busy day.

Finally, thanks to Melanie, Alan, and Bobby for all your help…we couldn’t have pulled this off without you.

So, another TNC show is in the bag. Onward to Shake and Anni…hope we see you there!

For the love of the song,
Barney & Beverly
